ALVIS MK6 SALAMANDER FIRE TENDER RAF HENDON 2024 - WALKAROUND GALLERY
The Alvis Salamander is a six-wheel drive airport crash tender with off-road capabilities, developed in 1956. It shares the same Alvis six-wheel-drive chassis and other components with the Saladin armoured car and Saracen armoured personnel carrier. In turn it led to the Stalwart load carrier, which was derived from the Salamander. The vehicle is powered by a 6.5 litre, 211 HP, Rolls-Royce straight-eight engine and required a crew of six people. Firefighting equipment was provided by The Pyrene Company Limited. 125 Salamanders were built and used by the Royal Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force. This Salamander was on display at RAF Hendon air museum.
